Getting a New Groove for 2011

Welcome to 2011!  Does the thought of the new year excite you or depress you?  If it is the latter, it is time for a change.  Getting back into a positive groove is the best thing that you can do for yourself.  How could it be any other way?

Some people can work a job for years.  The constant challenge, thrill, and stimulation keeps it fresh for them.  If however, your job has become a monotonous and predictable snore fest or you are tired of the emotional toll that it exacts on you, it is high time for a change.

Please Release Me…

If you are like me, and many others that I have worked with, what was once a fulfilling and inspiring work situation became as dull as dishwater over time.  Prior to my entering the corporate realm full-time eight years ago, I was a successful Behaviour Therapist, specializing in crisis intervention…for 16 years.

Even though I had a three year wait list for my services, was one of the top billing therapists, and never had to market myself, the work became increasingly disengaging for me.  I knew that it was time for a change.  Golden handcuffs be damned!

Rinse & Repeat…Arg…

At the time I didn’t know what it was that I needed to re-ignite the fire in my belly for my work.  All I knew was that the status quo was no longer acceptable.  I was no longer willing to come home exhausted and wake up in the mornings dreading having to do the same thing all over again.

Passion Reset

For me this was not an easy process.  As a therapist, I was supposed to know all this stuff, right?  I couldn’t have been more wrong.  No matter who you are or what your training, the ‘go it alone’ approach is risky and often slow.  It took me three years of being unhappy to finally bite the bullet and seek out a coach.

Having a highly skilled thinking partner who could hold me accountable, keep me focused, and provide me with the tools and resources that I needed along my journey was invaluable.  I quickly came to discover that while my passion, i.e. people, had not changed, the vehicle I used to engage my passion needed to. This was a major epiphany for me and quickly propelled me into finding my new happy place.  From there the rest is a rather pleasant (new groove) history.

Where are you at?  Are you in a happy and enjoyable groove?  Or are you in a dull or painful rut?  If so, what will it take for you to decide to change your circumstances?

To a happy and invigorating New Year!
